DV 2024 Segments – Mill Way, Nutfield Marsh Road, Clay Lane
Overview – Distance: 72 km, Climbing: 840 m
Café stop – See below
Tick off three segments in a loop around Redhill.
The first segment is Mill Way just past Leatherhead. The start is at the speed limit signs just before the Beaverbrook estate. The road gets ever steeper through the golf courses and the segment finishes at the top just past the car park on the right.
At the Headley junction turn right along Headley Common Road to the top of Pebble Coombe. Descend Pebble, cross over the railway and left at the roundabout to Reigate. At Reigate follow the one-way system and take the Croydon Road to Mersham. At the traffic lights turn right and then left under the bridge. Follow the route to Nutfield Marsh Road.
The segment starts by the Inn on the Pond sign, which is by a pond! The road surface is so much better now parts have been resurfaced. The gradient slowly increases to over 10% near the end. There are always cars parked at the top which can create a pinch point.
At the Nutfield crossroads, turn right and then left into Mid Street and slide right off to Sandy Lane, signposted Redhill Aerodrome. Enjoy the sweeping descent of Bower Hill Lane. At the junction turn right into Clay Lane.
The Clay Lane segment starts just as you come out of the short railway tunnel. After about 250m at a junction, you need to jink left onto Fullers Wood Lane. The end of the segment is by a high hedge with a red brick wall 25m before the junction. Stop before the junction and turn round.
Next stop is coffee in Reigate at Maison Du Velo (there are other cafés in Reigate). Descend Fullers Wood Lane and turn right into Philanthropic Road. Follow the route under the railway and into Reigate on Blackborough Road.
The route home is on the main road from Reigate to Dorking. Alternatively, you could go via Betchworth and Brockam). Then Pixham Lane and onto Leatherhead and Oxshott.
